Biography

Spouse Magdaleen (Madeleine) V. der Straten

Simon was a French-speaking Walloon Huguenot (Protestant) born in Valenciennes near Landrecies in what was then Hainaut Province, under French rule. He went to Holland, the Netherlands, to escape religious persecution in France and stayed for fifteen years, before emigrating to America aboard the private trader ship, De Trouw (Faith) with his wife and children. [1][2]

The ship left from Harlingen, Holland, Netherlands and arrived in New Netherland on the 12 Feb 1659. The name on the passenger list is "Symon Drune" from Henegouwen (Hainaut). [3] Fellow passengers were Epke Banta and Jellis Jansen Mandeville.

He was one of 32 men who settled in Harlem, north of New Amsterdam on Manhattan Island. He acquired three lots for farming on Jochem Pieters Flat which lay between the Harlem River and Old Kingsbridge Rd. On the 14 Mar 1662, Simon bid for 12 morgen (24 acres) in New Harlem at Montagne's Flat.

Last Will and Testament: 1678

Simon's last Will and Testament, written in French follows:

The will was proved on the 13 Jun 1678. Simon was sick, and perhaps in extremis, as he did not put his hand to the will, and thus its date may be that of his death.

Notes

Simon signed the following petition "To The Noble, Great And Honorable, The Director General And Council In New Netherland. The undersigned, owners and occupants of the lands within the village and jurisdiction of New Haerlem, respectfully represent, that to their great surprise and solicitude, they have been informed that the eight guilders which your Honors required said proprietors to pay for each morgen of land taken by them, should be paid in beavers, or their value; whereas this was not the understanding of your petitioners, who, in regard to the announcement made by your Honors, on the 4th of March, 1658, as to the privileges with which this village was to be favored, did not otherwise conceive respecting the price set upon said land, but that payment thereof was to be made in sewant currency, according to the customary usage.

Had they understood differently, they would never have agreed, nor could have been persuaded, to burden themselves with so hard an undertaking as that of bringing those lands under cultivation, besides paying thus heavily for them ; and even yet the petitioners, instead of finding themselves eased in their labors, have great difficulty in making these lands fit for tillage, so they are now wholly discouraged, as they did not apprehend that they should encounter the present difficulty. Wherefore, addressing themselves to your Honors, they pray that your Honors may be pleased to declare, by a favorable answer on the margin, that the petitioners may pay the eight guilders per morgen, in sewant, in the usual course between man and man." Simon was a Corporal in the Third Company, New Harlem, 12 Jun 1663, and served at Esopus (Kingston) against the Indians.

Simon received a supply of powder on the 2 Sep 1663 for use in the event of renewed Indian attacks. Simon was known to the Dutch at Harlem as "de Waal" and to the French as "le Ouallon" (the Walloon). Simon sold his Harlem land on the 13 Mar 1666, to Bussing and others. He bought a few acres in Flushing, near Jean Genung, and is named on the rate list of 1675.

The transcription of the will appears to be an uncorrected OCR. It's clearly incorrect. Maybe native speakers can sort this out, but my school French doesn't allow me to correct the errors so that I can read it. An image of the will should be posted or referenced.
